Thank you for visiting our site.
This website has been designed to provide you with easy access to pages of information about The Friends of Woking Community Hospital, our relationship with the Hospital, details of the Hospital services and information about how you can become a Friend, simply make a donation or even include us by way of a gift in your will.
There were over 100,000 recorded patient visits to the Community Hospital last year but there are only 300 Friends. Part of the current mission of The Friends is to close that gap and to use the additional subscription income to provide further and greater support for this fine Hospital.
Godfrey’s Bionic Walk as a “Thank You” to Woking Community Hospital
The picture shows Godfrey Chapples riding an exercise bike in the Physiotherapy department of Woking Community Hospital. The bike was installed this year, funded by the Friends of the Hospital.
In August 2008 Godfrey had his left knee totally replaced, and in December 2008 Godfrey had his right knee totally replaced. After each operation, he had six weeks rehabilitation in the Physio department at Woking Community Hospital. The skill and care of this rehab. has left him walking strongly, and feeling years younger. So as a gesture of thanks, Godfrey is to lead a group of walkers, including others who have had knee or hip replacements on a sponsored walk for the Community Hospital.
Godfrey, who lives in Byfleet is a well-known figure in local Church, Community and political circles. A few years back he was a Woking Borough Councillor. He celebrates his seventieth birthday in September, so this seemed a good time to have the walk.
The Friends are working with Godfrey to stage the event, at the Woking Athletic Club in Sheerwater, from 2pm to 4pm on Sunday 12th September (The Ground will be open from 1pm to 5pm) . The Woking Athletic Club are supporting the event by giving free use of their track.
The walk will be a number of laps round the 400 metre track. How many laps each walker will do depends on them, but two hours’ walking is the suggested maximum. Godfrey is trying to do 50 laps in four hours, which sounds a bit much. The idea is to show how good the Hospital’s treatment has been, not to stage a test of endurance – heroics are not called for. The more walkers, sponsors and spectators, the merrier.
If you would like to do the walk, the details can be obtained on the events page, or by contacting Godfrey on 01932 343691 or at godfreyhc@btinternet.com or by signing the forms at the Reception desks in the Hospital.
